4YRS Strong 💪

4 years ago today, we launched 4WKS to the world with a market stall at the OZCF in Cape Town. As 3 cousins plus 2 good friends and co-investors, we started working on it in January 2019 with the vision and mission to create a better alternative to two things: wasteful plastic and aluminum pods and the coffee inside them. We wanted to use something as small as a compostable pod and as yummy as coffee from your fave local roaster to bring attention to what we use, where we throw it away and to shine a light on the truly excellent, bursting-at-the-seams coffee scene happening in SA. And to have the most fun along the way. 

We’d be lying if we said that it’s been easy. There have been so many twists and turns along the way (“sustainability is not a straight line” became a mantra of ours; “trust the process”, another), pods that didn’t work (a whole shipment!), rookie errors, misunderstandings, missing machine parts, zero cash flow, no power, strained relationships and some really painful moments… But, all of those have been completely overshadowed by two big, beautiful things. 

 

1. The growth we’ve experienced — as people and as a company — and, with it, the hard-won lessons that have made us stronger, kinder, more humble humans. 

 

2. The connections we’ve made: from beautiful new teammates to our incredible partner roasters and compost collaborators like YWaste to the most amazing community of coffee snobs who love the planet: YOU!!! So many of you have supported us right from the beginning and, WK after WK, with love, support and loyalty, have made 4WKS what it is today. We would not be here — in a factory in Woodstock pumping out pods, with good vibes, an exceptional team and a compost program that’s shifting the planet, one pod at a time — without all of you! 

And to sneak in 2 more to make it 4, we’d add:

3. The fun we’ve had in building something we believe in!

4. And the gratitude in being able to get up and to do it, every day of the WK.

At 4YRS old, there are so many exciting things on the horizon (literally, in SA and abroad!) and we feel, post-growing pains (🤞), that our not-so-little biz and planet-loving mission is POPPING! 🤩🍿🐡 In the coming WKS, we’ll be sharing some of our latest developments (and a slightly refreshed look 👀) with you and are committed, more than ever, to spread fresh energy, to share the country’s most delicious coffees and to play every part we can in making tomorrow’s mornings a little better, a little brighter, and a little kinder ☀️

So today, with heaps of humility, gratitude and pride in our hearts, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU for being such a huge part of 4WKS, for celebrating with us, and for helping us grow it into something with a beat of its own; and a mission and a vision bigger than all of us — and achievable only when we do it together. We love you!
