Composting at Scale with Earth Again Co.
Introducing the Aerobin
Our human-ness has left a pretty sizeable impact on Earth. For the most part, this impact has been detrimental. We want everything to be bigger, louder, faster, more powerful, more, more, more. The problem with more is that it leaves Earth with less...
Occasionally, our advancements and the planet’s needs overlap and technology, designed with Earth in mind, is developed. We’d like to introduce you to Earth Again, a local company intent on bringing you epic inventions that live in harmony with 🌍.
Meet The Boys Behind The Bin
Earth Again Co. was borne out of Tom and Sam’s shared love for Nature and her selfless gifts. From beautiful waves to surf, awesome mountains to climb and endless sunsets to be mesmerised by, Mama Earth really does give her all and asks for very little in return. As a token of appreciation, the boys went into business to make giving back to 🌍 a little easier for us all. Meet the Aerobin, a product packed full of innovative features with enough soul behind it to balance out the tech.
Designed to efficiently break down organic matter (including 4WKS pods), the Aerobin turns kitchen scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost without you having to do more than lift the lid. We sat down with Tom and Sam to find out what exactly makes this piece of equipment so special:
What makes the Aerobin different from conventional composting methods?Taking inspiration from how organic waste decomposes in Nature, the bin has been designed with a ‘lung’. This draws oxygen into the bin and creates a chimney effect. As the waste heats up, cool air is pulled in from outside through the lung, pushing the warm inside air to the lid. This then condenses and drops back down, resulting in a constant flow of oxygen.
Could you summarise your Earth Again and Aerobin journey for us?
The road from our childhood perception of composting as a smelly chore done by adults to embracing waste decomposition wholeheartedly hasn’t been seamless. It’s taken many years to understand the importance of composting for the health of our planet and many years of falling in and out of love with the process, with a lot of trial and error along the way. Fast forward through many failed attempts at controlling the smell and pests that often come with traditional household composting bins, we discovered the Aerobin and were pleasantly surprised by the fresh and earthy smell of the waste decomposing inside (and how low maintenance it is!).
Where did the name Earth Again come from?
We pinned it down in a serious brainstorming session, involving a lot of hard noes 😅
What is your goal for the future of organic waste in South Africa? What is 1 daily habit we can all adopt to help achieve this?
We envision every household, business and community embracing responsible waste management, actively reducing their carbon footprint and reconnecting with Nature. Something as simple as keeping a designated compost container on your kitchen counter for food scraps is a great way to get started. Once the container is full, transfer the contents to an outdoor compost pile or Aerobin. Consistent composting also makes you more conscious about what you're consuming so you might find you end up producing less waste and saving money on groceries (win, win!).
How do customers know if they need the 200L or 400L Aerobin?
If you’re a beginner composter with a relatively small space like a compact garden or balcony, the 200L is your best friend. If you’re slightly more familiar with composting or produce a lot of garden waste such as grass cuttings or leaves, the 400L is for you.
What should you never put in an Aerobin?
No plastics, meat, dairy, faeces or oil, please!
Thanks, Tom & Sam!
Some final thoughts
Adding compost to our soil produces food with a higher nutritional value. By composting our organic waste, we are nourishing ourselves and Earth, fostering a greater human connection to the land. This practice develops our sense of community and empathy as we better understand our collective responsibility in caring for ourselves, our planet and those we share it with. The respect we show Earth directly reflects the respect we show ourselves and visa versa.
For most of us, getting older means learning new skills is no longer a priority. We get comfortable and complacent. We often forget to see the forest for the trees. Diving into composting is a formative experience that builds new neural pathways as we learn about waste reduction, sustainable agriculture and how to tread lightly on the land – new skills we can take with us to pass on to friends, children and loved ones along the way.
We are extremely proud to now stock Earth Again’s Aerobin on our site, giving you another composting method to make bettering your waste habits a little easier.
